|Watermark||The introduction of polymer banknotes saw the end of the customary Watermark. It was replaced with a Variable Optical Security Device in the bottom corner. The clear window [Optical Security Device] contains a compass and ’20’.|

There were no general circulation $20 banknotes issued in 1999, 2000, 2001 or 2004.
There were also two design modifications introduced with this new series of notes.
On previous issues the signature of the Secretary to the Treasury appeared above that of the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia. This was reversed from this issue.
The names of the people portrayed on the notes had their names printed underneath their portrait and included as part of the design.
